1O unit community package – for SRSA and the city of CPT in Mitchell’s plain, May 2013
The City of Cape Town, as part of our efforts to build a Caring and Inclusive City, has provided a public open space in Galaxy Road, Rocklands in Mitchells Plain, on which the National Department of Sports and Recreation will be donating an outdoor gym.
This site is in close proximity to a bus stop, which means that people from other areas of Mitchells Plain will also have easy access to this facility.
The Outdoor Gym will be officially opened by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula and the Minister for Cultural Affairs and Sport in the Western Cape, Dr Ivan Meyer. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker together with the Ward Councillor, Daniel Christians, will accept this donation on behalf of the City.
Ward Councillor Christians, will be allocating money to ensure that the area is fenced off to prevent vandalism and theft of the 21 pieces of outdoor gym equipment.
“The City is very grateful to the National Department for this donation which will bring great value to the surrounding community. This outdoor gym will promote awareness of the importance of exercise and fitness in reducing illness and obesity, as well as promoting social interaction,” said Councillor Christians.
“We as a City strive to create spaces where communities can pursue active and healthy lifestyles and enjoy the outdoors, as well as spaces where community life can be fostered. This outdoor gym equipment has transformed this piece of land into such a space. We look forward to the positive impact it will have on activity levels in this community, as well as the hours of enjoyment it will bring,” says Alderman Walker.
These 10 pieces of quality gym equipment were made by World Outdoor Fitness, a company which specialises in the design, production and installation of outdoor fitness equipment and are designed to withstand all forms of weather.
